Man lost 120 million VND after hearing a strange phone call

(Dan Tri) - A man in Tu Ky district, Hai Duong received a call from a strange phone number saying that he had not paid his electricity bill and could have his electricity supply cut off. He then followed the instructions and lost 120 million VND in his account.

A few days ago, a man named PVV in Nghia Dung village, Dai Son commune, Tu Ky district (Hai Duong) lost 120 million VND in his bank account because he followed the instructions of a stranger who called to say he had not paid his electricity bill.

Specifically, Mr. V. received a call from a strange phone number saying that his family had not paid their electricity bill and might have their electricity service interrupted (power cut).

Next, the strange phone number instructed Mr. V. on how to pay his electricity bill by accessing a link sent via text message.

Following the instructions, Mr. V. accessed the above link and immediately lost 120 million VND from his bank account.

Not stopping there, the strange phone number above told Mr. V. that his account had transferred the wrong amount of money, and that if he wanted to get it back, he would have to use another bank account to transfer the money back.

Mr. V. followed the instructions, went to an acquaintance's house to borrow his bank account number and told him to continue accessing the above link. After accessing the link, the victim lost 60 million VND.

Regarding the above incident, speaking with Dan Tri reporter , Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thuan, Deputy Chief of Office of Hai Duong Electricity Company Limited (EVN Hai Duong), said that the situation of fraud and appropriation of assets on cyberspace has occurred quite a lot, involving many different industries and professions, including the electricity industry.

Regarding the electricity industry, Mr. Thuan said that scammers use many different forms, such as: asking customers to download fake apps to pay electricity bills; paying electricity bills to personal bank accounts; accessing strange links to update citizen identification cards (CCCD) instead of old ID cards with fees; announcing power cuts in the next 2 hours because of unpaid electricity bills;...

Returning to the case of Mr. V. mentioned above, Mr. Thuan judged that this customer might have paid the electricity bill by automatic deduction from his bank account, so he paid the electricity bill online like that.

Regarding the monthly electricity bill notification process and notification of late payment by EVN Hai Duong, EVN Hai Duong will do the following: Notification via text messages to the phone number and email address provided by the customer in the contract.

"For customers who are late in paying their electricity bills, in addition to notifying them via text message or email, we also send a paper to their home before performing the power cut procedure according to regulations," said Mr. Thuan.

The Deputy Chief of EVN Hai Duong Office added that the situation of fraud on cyberspace to appropriate assets is complicated, not only in the electricity industry.

Recently, EVN Hai Duong has coordinated with functional agencies and press agencies to educate customers about forms of fraud related to the electricity industry.

EVN Hai Duong recommends that customers be vigilant, such as: Do not access unofficial links and apps; do not pay electricity bills through personal accounts; do not pay expenses through unidentified bank accounts; do not provide ID cards or personal information to strangers; when suspecting a scam call, customers should contact 19006769 for instructions on how to resolve the issue.

According to Cam Giang Electricity under EVN Hai Duong, recently, in Cam Giang district, customers have received calls from strange phone numbers starting with 0886755917, 0886765320,... claiming to be electricity industry employees calling and demanding payment of electricity bills, threatening to cut off electricity.

The bad guys use the above phone number to ask customers to provide information related to their bank accounts or transfer money to accounts that are not owned by the electricity company. Cam Giang Electricity affirms that this is an act of defrauding customers, affecting the image and reputation of the electricity industry in the community.

Cam Giang Electricity recommends that if customers receive a strange call claiming to be a "power company employee" or "customer care center" but do not provide full name, position, management area, etc., they should immediately notify the hotline number 19006769 to coordinate with the power company to check and handle the situation.

At the same time, when customers encounter the above situation, they also need to immediately notify the local authorities to take warning and propaganda measures in the area.
